Spencer's guide to - Woking Headlines

Apparently Surrey has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. This is clearly not a bad thing, however it does have one unfortunate side-effect - dreary local news. You may have noticed that in the absence of anything of significance occuring, certain free papers attempt to pass off some individual's petty grievance as front-page news and fill the rest with planning applications and blatantly sponsored restaurant "news".

OK, maybe that's a little harsh but for those that agree with me, here's my drivel-filtered recent local news section...

You may struggle to believe it, but apparently Victoria Way will be completely closed Southbound (toward Guildford) next week for sewer repairs. Expect a torturous and traffic-laden detour plus chaos in town for those motorists passing through who hence don't know about it.

Concorde for Brooklands ?
You would be hard pushed to have missed the fact that today saw the last commercial flight of Concorde, and since Branson has been denied a shot with them hopefully Brooklands museum will at least be successful in their bid to bring one of the 34-year old wonders to rest with them.

If you live in Horsell, you can't fail to have heard about the proposals for Surrey County Hall to be moved from Kingston to the Brewery Road car-park site. Is Woking the crappiest town in the UK ?
That was the proposition by Jeremy Clarkson, in that quality journal The Sun, at the weekend. Spencer doesn't think so, but he can see where he's coming from, and so he was asked to go head-to-head with the council on the Ed Douglas breakfast show on BBC Southern Counties Radio! There followed a brief text-msg poll that tended to agree with him.
05.10.03
Favourite Theatre Venue ?
Today marks the closing date for an internet-poll on lastminute.com which included a nomination for the New Victoria as Favourite Theatre Venue (other contenders include Sadlers Wells, the Barbican and the Royal Opera House). Brookwood Junction Finished !?
It seems that the sometimes horrendous queues at the Brookwood A320 crossroads are finally past us as the "revamping" of the junction appears to be finally complete. So one year has passed since the '30-week' roadworks started, and several house demolitions and significant civil engineering to the canal later we seem to now have ... well much the same junction as was there before really. Very dubious.
